The Bassmaster Classic Expo has become a prime time for bass fishing manufacturers to introduce new products. Here are some of the best ones for traveling anglers from the 2022 show in Greenville, SC.

We’re headed back to Lake El Salto this June and I’m going back to the basics. On several of my last trips I decided that I wanted to try a bunch of new baits and I wasn’t going to stop fishing with a particular bait until it caught a fish. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. Now it’s time to go all-in on five lures that I feel are a sure thing.

There are plenty of peacock bass imitating lures out there, but not all of them can stand up to the sometimes toothy thrashing of Amazonian beasts. Fortunately, there’s a new addition to the mix. The Gan Craft Shift 183 has a beautiful paint job and maintains its proper motion at high speeds.

I understand that some of you are picky about your rods. Maybe you’re loyal to a particular brand. Nothing I can say will dissuade you from bringing your own rods south of the border. If I told you that your own rods were categorically unnecessary, I’d be a hypocrite since I have 20 of them down there. If you decide to tote your own, bring some all-purpose models, but also consider which techniques are most likely to benefit from specialized actions or models.

At times fishing a Carolina Rig feels like watching paint dry, and when you break off it takes a long time to retie properly, another strike against it. At the same time, I’m honest enough to know that it can produce big fish and a lot of fish. There have been several times where we’ve been able to catch a few fish offshore on crankbaits, football jigs or Texas Rigs, while a Carolina Rig seemed to get bit on almost every cast.

I’m unrepentant about the fact that I peruse the Tackle Warehouse “New Items” tab daily and still order far more gear than I can ever use in a lifetime – although I’ll die trying. Here are six of the most intriguing items for traveling anglers that they’ve added recently.

I absolutely love the Casa Vieja Lodge experience – everything from the accommodations to the food to the service and of course the fishing. But here’s my gripe: It doesn’t provide any tackle-buying opportunities. Still, I’m bringing new apparel.

Guys like KVD, Ike and Hank Cherry certainly know more about lures than I do, but they could also catch fish on a wet cigarette butt. No region is more closely associated with a single crankbait than the Ozarks and the Storm Wiggle Wart, but it’s not a cure-all. You can’t just fling it out and get bit on every cast. We continue to monitor airline-friendly rods (many of them from outside the U.S.). I won’t put out specific recommendations unless and until I have real-life experience with them, but my knowledge is growing every day as I put them through their paces. In the meantime, here are four notes and finds that may help you in the near term.

We’ve fished El Salto just about every January since 2013 and this year we found it to be more of a struggle than usual. The moon was full and the weather was cooler than normal and the fishing wasn’t up to its overall consistency. Luckily our group made precise adjustments to increase the bite.

Historically, the SPRO BBZ Rat has been an inexpensive option for rat fishing El Salto. Unfortunately, the SPROs have become tough to find at a reasonable price. I have a few still in the package that I plan to put to good use. However, if we’re fortunate enough to get on a good rat bite at El Salto this month I’d like to gain confidence in some other options.
