Amago: The Japanese Trout Behind Some of the Best JDM Lure Patterns

We’ve already covered Tackle Warehouse’s selection of lures meant to imitate Yamame, a trout native to Japan. The JDM manufacturers didn’t stop there, however – they also produce a nice selection of swimbaits and jerkbaits meant to imitate Amago, a related species.

They originated in western Japan, and while they don’t grow huge, they are absolutely gorgeous. Check out the reproductions that you can fish anywhere there are trout eaters – in Japan or here in North America.


It seems like many anglers who target Amago use Tenkara gear. It’s appropriate, therefore, that Tenkara USA makes a 13’6” rod called the “Amago.”
