My Favorite Whopper Plopper and Choppo Colors
If you’re allegedly a bass angler and you haven’t yet become addicted to a Whopper Plopper bite, there’s something wrong with you. The first time I threw the 130 model Plopper at Mexico’s Lake El Salto back in 2016 was life-altering – I’d never seen topwater strikes that vicious outside of the Amazon. While it may never be that sudden and violent again, I continue to throw the Plopper and its various competitors, most notably the semi-lookalike but not-quite soundalike Berkley Choppo. They create different sounds, and some days the bass clearly prefer one over the other. Here are my three favorite colors in each of them:
Whopper Plopper
Powder
The first one I bought/used, and still my go-to
Loon
My favorite under darker skies
Phantom Shad
Best pure shad imitator
HD Threadfin Shad
My confidence color when bass are feeding on shad in clear to ultra-clear water.
Bone
An all-around baitfish imitator
HD Baby Bass
Looks more like a crappie or tilapia to me.
Which are your favorites? Which did I miss? I feel like I should be throwing bluegill imitators and chrome more regularly, but it’s hard to put down the proven winners.
