Pumpkinseed Sunfish Are Everywhere — These Swimbaits Finally Match Them
Many of the lakes and rivers I fish are loaded with pumpkinseed sunfish. They’re abundant, aggressive, and brightly colored — yet when you browse most tackle shops or online retailers, the overwhelming majority of panfish-imitating swimbaits are designed to mimic bluegills, not pumpkinseed.
That’s a missed opportunity.
Pumpkinseed sunfish are just as protein-packed as their bluegill cousins, and in many fisheries they’re actually more common. Their vivid orange, teal, and olive markings also make them highly visible to bass, especially in clear water or around shallow cover. When bass are keyed in on pumpkinseed, a generic bluegill profile won’t always get the job done.
While their intricate coloration may make them harder to replicate, a handful of manufacturers have stepped up with pumpkinseed-friendly swimbaits — both hard and soft. Here are several worth a closer look.
And LIVETARGET adds to the mix in some other categories:
Of course, you can always turn to a custom painter or tweak an existing sunfish pattern with marker pens if you want a perfect match. But these lures offer a strong starting point — and, more importantly, give you options when bass are feeding on something other than a standard bluegill.
