Jeff Gustafson: A True Champion On and Off the Water

It couldn’t have been easy for Jeff Gustafson to return to Knoxville, the site of his greatest bass fishing accomplishment. The 2023 Bassmaster Classic winner did not qualify for the 2026 Classic and was therefore relegated to the Expo floor to work for his sponsors. I have no doubt that he was asked no fewer than 5000 times, “Why aren’t you fishing?”

Some anglers might have moped (sorry, bad joke), others might have been surly or reclusive. Gussy was none of the above. During my one visit to the show floor, he passed by and we acknowledged each other, then he doubled back with a gift – some autographed Smeltinator jigheads. They’ll go right onto my shelf of greatness – next to a Red Eye Shad from KVD, a Giant Dog-X from AMart, and all sorts of other Hall of Fame worthy artifacts.

The biggest gift we’ve gotten from him, however, is the attitude. Without putting anyone else down, every other Classic winner can learn something from how he’s handled both the success and the disappointment.
