How to Get to Argentina for a Golden Dorado Fishing Adventure

Fishing Boat Parana River Corrientes Argentina

Golden dorado fishing in Argentina has been on our bucket lists for a long time — and they should be on yours, too. Hard-charging dorado thrive in the waters of Corrientes, Argentina, and that’s why we’re hosting a trip to Don Joaquin River Lodge. The lodge provides access to some of the best fishing on the planet as well as a truly authentic Argentinean experience.

From the U.S., the trip may sound far, but reaching northern Argentina is easier, more affordable, and less stressful than most travelers expect. With overnight flights, minimal time zone changes, and a scenic drive instead of complicated connections, you can be casting for trophy dorado shortly after you arrive.

Why Argentina Is Worth the Trip

Argentina is famous for two things: world-class fishing and world-class culture. Whether it’s golden dorado in the north or Patagonian trout in the south, the country’s opposite-season fishery means you can plan your trip when things are “off” at home.

But the adventure is more than fishing:

  • Explore vibrant Buenos Aires, the Paris of South America.

  • Taste authentic Argentine beef and Malbec wine.

  • Experience gaucho culture and local hospitality.

Joining a hosted trip means you’ll enjoy both the fishing and the cultural experience — with all the logistics smoothed out for you. We’ll handle that, making sure that you take full inventory of the scenery, the locals’ way of life, and every possible opportunity to catch your dream fish.

Getting There: Flight Options for Your Argentina Fishing Trip

While Argentina is not necessarily close, it’s remarkably easy to get to Buenos Aires. In fact, from just about anywhere in the US, you shouldn’t have to make more than one connection – and with overnight flights, just knock yourself out with a Tylenol PM and wake up ready to go.

All three major US carriers, plus some international airlines, have direct flights from the US to the capital of Argentina. Here’s a list of direct flights to Buenos Aires (EZE):

  • Atlanta – Delta

  • Dallas Ft. Worth – American (October—March)

  • Houston – United

  • Miami – American

  • Miami – Aerolineas Argentina

  • Miami – LATAM (December—June)

  • New York (JFK) – American

  • New York (JFK) –Delta (October—March)

Flight times average 9-10 hours.

For European travelers, direct flights (approx. 11 hours) are available from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, and Rome.

From Buenos Aires to Corrientes and Don Joaquin River

Once we get to Argentina, we’ll overnight in Buenos Aires. It’s not far off eastern and central US time zones, so there won’t be much adjustment in terms of jet lag. We’ll get some rest at a premium hotel, maybe grab a steak and some red wine, and set out the next morning.

To get to some remote fishing lodges you need to take a puddle jumper, and that’s an option here, but we’re going with ground transport in this instance. Why? It’s basically just as fast. Otherwise you’d have to drive to the domestic airport (about 40 minutes from the international airport), check in, wait for your plane, fly an hour and a half or so, and then drive for a couple of hours.

This scenic drive on quality roads is about 5 hours, plus perhaps a stop for an authentic Argentinean lunch. It takes about the same, and you’re less likely to get messed up by weather delays or mechanical issues. Also, if you’re traveling with a rod tube or other typical fishing luggage, you don’t have to worry about excess baggage fees or having a local carrier reject your precious cargo. It’s simply more efficient. If you want to sleep, you can, but you’ll probably want to check out all of the distinctive scenery as you anticipate fishing for trophy golden dorado that afternoon.

All in all, it’s easier, more affordable, and less prone to delays or other issues than most international fishing trips.

Making Argentina Affordable: Costs and Budget Tips

If you’re a bass angler, you probably already have all of the gear necessary to succeed in this multi-species fishery. You may end up making an order or three from Tackle Warehouse like us, but it’s probably not necessary. That’s your first savings.

Flights are also surprisingly affordable. From Washington, D.C. (without a direct option), we consistently see round-trip fares around $700–800. In many U.S. cities, economy tickets run under $1,000 — comparable to flying coast-to-coast domestically.

As for the lodge: Don Joaquin River Lodge offers tremendous value. Your stay includes premium wines, world-class meals, expert guides, and domestic transportation. Once we finalize your fishing days, the only extras will be international airfare, Buenos Aires meals/activities, and gratuities.
