Late Summer 2025 Fishing Travel News for Addicts Like Us
I may be a little addicted to fishing travel – and the promise of future travels to both places I’ve been and places I’ve yet to visit. If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re equally interested in fishing related topics. Good news: the world is a big place and we’re here to help you explore it. I continue to monitor trade press and other sources to keep the fires burning and to save you some time.
Here are a few items that’ve stood out to me over the past month or so:
Finally: Malé Velana’s Airport New Terminal Opens, In Phased Manner — The Maldives is high on our list, and we would certainly expect some hassle in getting there, but anything that makes it slightly easier seems good – unless it reduces the unspoiled nature of the islands.
Report Finds Plane That Crashed In Alaska 2 Years Ago Was Overloaded With Moose Meat & Antlers — We’ve been in a lot of small planes over the years, from Brazil to Africa to Alaska. I’ve never felt unsafe, but this is a good reminder that they likely have less room for error or overloading than the commercial jets we fly.
How to Stay Safe From Rip Currents, and What to Do if You’re Caught in One — You don’t necessarily need to be swimming to fall victim to rip currents. If you fish and can’t swim, learn now. Even if you can, take care not to get stuck in situations that are perilous.
WestJet just announced new direct flight routes from Calgary to sunny destinations — I don’t love the cold, but I do love Panama, and if I lived in Calgary I’d want to trade places sometimes between December and April. Now WestJet makes that much easier with direct flights four times a week.
Copa Airlines opens reservations for connections to Puerto Plata and Santiago — I continue to be amazed by Copa’s continued expansion, which will soon include new stops in the Dominican Republic. That might not be the best route for us, but it could be a great way to chase the marlin from one side of Central America to up above the other side.
Supporting our Salmon: Bristol Bay Defended, New Protections Proposed — Every time we think the Pebble Mine project is dead, it seems to come back, but we finally have consistency across presidential administrations. We love fishing in Bristol Bay and hope this truly spells the mine’s end.
Alaska Airlines & Hawaiian New ATMOSpheric Program Announced On August 20, 2025 — If you fly Alaska Air and/or Hawaiian you may be hear that their frequent flier programs are merging – we’re hoping this is good for the good consumer, as we fully intend to fly Alaska in the future and wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to fly Hawaiian.
19 Nightmare Guide Trip Scenarios to Avoid — Even for those of us who’ve fished with dozens of guides, outfitters, lodges and charters, this is a good reminder that by being a good client you improve your own likelihood of success on the water.
TSA Debuts Families-Only Security Screening Lines — TSA seems to be making a genuine attempt of late to increase efficiency and reduce security theater. They’re started this program at Orlando and Charlotte and plan to add it at seven smaller airports.
