HPFC Hall of Fame: Charlie Brewer’s Slider Heads
In my earliest days of tournament fishing in the mid-1990s, my occasional success was often the result of using Charlie Brewer Slider Heads – most often with a Zoom Finesse Worm on the back, later frequently with a Centipede instead. Before I knew what the hell a dropshot or shakey head was, the Slider rig was my limit getter. It was always on the deck of my 17’10” fiberglass rocket, and when I didn’t know what was going on I leaned it on even more heavily.
Furthermore, it produced my biggest Virginia largemouth – an 8-pounder that inhaled the bait below a dock on the midsection of Lake Gaston.
I continue to throw the Slider today and should probably use it even more. Not only do we have better spinning rods and reels today, but we also have great braids and fluorocarbons that weren’t available back then. Moreover, our bass are increasingly pressured. The Slider skips like a sonofagun, does surprisingly well in cover (be sure to throw it in emerging grass) and gets bit 12 months out of the year. That’s why it should be in our Hall of Fame.
