In the late summer and early fall, when the bite gets tough in much of the country, a tiny buzzbait can generate surprisingly vicious strikes. Here on the Potomac, it’s been one of the worst-kept secrets for decades.
Not every manufacturer makes one, but there are enough 1/8 and 3/16 ounce versions on the market that you should be able to find one that fits your needs. More than anything else, make sure it has a quality hook because these small lures generate some incredible strikes and big limits.

Most of these models come from the manufacturer with skirts, but if you prefer a soft plastic on the back, consider one of the following:
I generally throw them on 20- or 30-pound braid. You’ll need to choose a rod carefully – something to winch bass out of thick cover, but with enough tip to sling these light and wind-catching lures a long distance. Some people will even use spinning tackle. I also add a small trailer hook whenever possible, especially if the buzzbait itself has a hook that’s too small for big fish.
