Glide Baits on My Current Wish List

Logos for several specialty swimbait glidebait manufacturers

It’s been about two years since my glide bait fascination began, and I poured rocket fuel on it when we attended the 2023 Swimbait Universe Gathering. I spent a thousand bucks there semi-indiscriminately. Since that time I’ve experimented intermittently. Part of the problem is that most of my fishing from April through September or October is spent on the Potomac River, where I’m generally in less than 4 feet of water which Is often choked with heavy grass.

Still, I’ve had some limited success. The River2Sea S-Waver was the gateway drug. The one that looks the best in the water to me is the Phoney Shad, and I’ve caught some fish on that one. The majority of my bites, though, have been on the 7-inch Taddo Eon. That might be a function of the particular paint job, the lake I’m using it on, or the fact that once I started getting bites I fished it more than the others. It runs well, is weighted perfectly, and I’m addicted.

Nevertheless, I’m still tempted to buy some more. Here are the ones on the top of my shopping list right now:

Tater Hog Custom Lures Hog Father Jr.

Pros: It seems to be Chris Zaldain’s go-to.

Cons: Hard to get, not inexpensive.

86 Baits Doomrider Glide Bait

Pros: Matty Wong made it work on TV at the Lake Fork Elite Series events.

Cons: Matty lost a few key fish. Also, I don’t know much about the bait.

Rafa Joey Shad Glide Baits

Pros: Easy to get = good color selection.

Cons: Easy to get = reduced mystique.

I’m trying to resist for now, particularly as I get into my shallow water river season, but also because I’m not sure what I’m looking for. Do I want and especially wide glide or something choppier? What color or colors are universally applicable or ideal for the places I fish? I could use some help and advice from the gurus – and I know that the swimbait community is opinionated.
