Jackall of Japan’s Pirarucu Commitment

It’s a long haul from Tokyo to Manaus, but apparently the jet lag is worth the effort because lots of hard core Japanese anglers make the journey to chase peacock bass and other fierce jungle fish. It’s probably not surprising, therefore, that numerous JDM manufacturers make gear specifically for South American species.

One of them is Jackall, which not only makes jungle-tested rods and lures, but also produces some distinctive color patterns. They’ve gone all-in on piraracu, a species we’ll chase in Bolivia this fall. Here are a few of our favorite lures in that color palette:

Tackle Warehouse carries some of them, like the Gantarel and Gantarel in Black Pirarucu (although they spell it Piraruku)

If you can’t find the ones you want, search online tackle shops and auction sites like ebay, where I’ve found various Jackall Pirarucu patterns including not only the three listed above, but also Lime Pirarucu – in past and current production lures including the Gantia, Chubby 38F, Magallon, Tiny Magallon, TN60 and Binksy.

Colors aside, some of my favorite Jackall lures over the years have included the following:

We always have some of them in the boat, and we’ll be sure to take some of the bigger models in various colors when we head to South America. If you’d like to go along, please shoot us an email and we’ll fill you in on the details.
