Brazil’s Tourist Visa Requirement is Finally in Effect Once Again
It’s been quite a while since we first wrote about it, and the Brazilian government delayed it several times, but as of last month it is finally once again necessary for Americans (as well as Canadians and Australians) to have a visa to enter Brazil.
That means if you’re going down any time soon, or planning a peacock bass fishing trip for later this year, don’t put it off too long. In fact, consider doing it now or setting a calendar reminder before you start restocking your braid and prop baits.
Fortunately, you no longer have to go to a consulate to get the visa. The Brazilian government has set up a fairly straightforward website that’ll lead you through the process.
They have a decent FAQ page, but here are a few basic facts:
When did this requirement go into effect? April 10, 2025.
How long is it good for? You typically can’t remain in the country for more than 90 days, although you can apply to extend it for up to a maximum of 180 total days per year. The visa itself is good for 5 or 10 years.
How much does it cost? $80.90
How long does it take to get it? The site says five business days, but I’d allow for more.
Can I store it on my phone? You must print it out (they’ll send you a PDF file) and present it when asked. However, it makes sense to keep a scan on your phone just in case it’s lost or destroyed.
You can even track the status of your application.
We strongly recommend that all anglers make a visit to the Brazilian Amazon at least once. Email us if you’d like more information on booking a trip or what to bring (in addition to your visa).
