Charting Our Baja Trip
As I’ve matured and perhaps calmed down a bit, I’ve learned that fishing trips aren’t necessarily just about catching fish. That’s the primary purpose, of course, but I’ve also enjoyed learning about the marine life and other natural resources in the areas we’ve visit. For a small investment I purchased waterproof cards from Rainforest Publications and Franko Maps to identify the marine life in Panama. They fit in my boat bag and have already come in handy a few times.
With that in mind, I purchased Rainforest’s “Mexico Marine Guide: Pacific Coast, Sea of Cortez.” It was less than nine bucks and arrived here in less than 24 hours from Amazon.
On our inaugural Baja trip we’ll be spending three days on a sportfisher heading from Cabo up toward (and likely into) Magdalena Bay. During that portion of the adventure I hope we’ll see plenty of striped marlin, and possibly some other billfish, along with wahoo, dorado and tuna. After that, we’ll be spending two days at a hotel in Mag Bay, chasing fish offshore one day and inshore the next. I have no idea what the targets will be, especially on the inshore day. Since I’m hoping to add some species to my life list, this chart may come in very handy.
It also includes pictures of the marine mammals that live in or traverse the area. We’ll likely be a little bit too early for the gray whales for which Mag Bay is famous, but I’m not counting them (or their cousins) out completely. I’ll be prepared when they show up boatside.
