Gifts to Remind the Peacock Bass Freak in Your Life of Brazil

A successful fishing trip for peacock bass to the Amazonian rainforest is one of the greatest experiences an angler can enjoy – wilderness, incredible hospitality, amazing scenery, and some of the most explosive topwater strikes on the planet. Unfortunately for most of us, we cannot go there multiple times a year, or even every year. While I’m sure I will be back at some point, in the meantime I like to remind myself occasionally of Brazil, one of my favorite countries, in other ways.

If you have a peacock bass angler in your life who likewise can’t get south of the Equator as often as he or she likes, you can always reward them with a token that demonstrates you understand their passion. While it might be hard to buy fishing tackle for them, there are plenty of other items that will keep Brazil at the forefront of their minds. Here are some to consider:

Cachaca used to make cairpirinha

The liquor from fermented sugar can be used to make the national drink, the caipirinha.

Guarana Antarctica six pack soft drink

Soft drink made with the Amazonian super-fruit, rumored to be an aphrodesiac

If you haven’t been, you need to go. My favorite restaurant, although according to my doctor my overindulgence may kill me. It’ll be worth it.

And if they’re going to spend a lot of time down there, they might want to at least figure out some basic Portuguese (my many years of Spanish in school prepared me only minimally for the sister language). Consider Duolingo or Rosetta Stone or some other way for them to get up to par.

I know that in the intro to this piece I implied I would not recommend fishing tackle, I’m going to briefly go back on that promise. If you have not already done so (and even if you’ll never make it to South America), I highly recommend that you check out Water Wood Custom Baits. My friend Marcos Malucelli, a former fishing guide in Brazil, makes them from Amazonian Marupá Pedra wood. They’re tough as nails and you may recognize some of the basic shapes.
