Unboxing My Alligator Skull: Why You Need to Experience a Gator Hunt at Grosse Savanne Lodge

Taxidermy souvenir from alligator hunting Grosse Savanne

How often do you get to stare down a modern-day dinosaur, pull the trigger, and bring home a trophy that’s more personally meaningful than any belt or wallet?

Last September, Hanna and I went alligator hunting at Grosse Savanne Lodge in Louisiana. I wasn’t sure quite what to expect. Still, I knew one thing for sure – memories will last forever but gator-skin shoes are a temporary pleasure. Nevertheless, I wanted a real, raw reminder of the experience, and something that could sit on my desk and make me smile for years to come. There was no question what it would be — the bleached skull of one of the nine gators we harvested on that trip. After months of anticipation, the box from Basin Taxidermy finally arrived, and today I’m unboxing it on camera.

I hope you enjoyed the video. But this isn’t just about a skull. Alligator hunting at Grosse Savanne wasn’t dangerous or super-grueling. Nevertheless, it was one of the highlights of my sporting life – and it’s one of the most surprisingly accessible adventures you can take — even if you’ve never hunted before. Even if you’ve never fired a gun, set foot in a marsh or “pinched the tail and sucked the head,” the guides at Grosse Savanne will still put you in the heart of the action—safely, ethically, and with a five-star meal waiting for you back at the lodge.”

If you’re ready to trade a typical vacation for an adventure you’ll never forget, Half Past First Cast can make your Grosse Savanne alligator hunt happen. Reach out — and let’s build your story. The skull is optional, but we can set that up, too.
