When I think of fall bass fishing, I dream of fish herding shad in the backs of creeks and chowing on topwaters while other anglers are at home watching football or sitting in a deer stand. Unfortunately, there are times during the fall when that stereotype doesn’t hold true and the bite is quite tough.

One of those periods is the “fall turnover,” when summertime’s previously stratified water starts to mix – the cooler water nearer to the bottom goes toward the top, and the warmer water near the surface edges down. It doesn’t happen on every waterway, and it typically provides long term benefits to the lake, but it can be frustrating for those of us chasing largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.
