Reppin’ Bristol Bay Sockeye

RepYourWater has established themselves as a clothing company that not only produces species-specific and region-specific gear, but one that also gives back to efforts they support.

So whether you want to display your affection for Montana Westslope cutthroat on a hat or show that you’re a Missouri Smallmouth guru, you can do it. You can also contribute to efforts to Stop Asian Carp or provide relief to storm-damaged Bahamas businesses.

Up until now, I haven’t purchased any of their gear. As someone who relishes traveling to new and varied places to fish, perhaps I didn’t want to pigeonhole myself as devoted to one particular lane. However, after returning from my second trip to Bear Trail Lodge in Alaska, and hearing lodge owner Nanci Morris Lyon talk extensively and passionately about the Bristol Bay sockeye salmon run, that may change.

The region produces the largest sockeye run in the world, and this year Hanna and I timed it at or near its peak. We tussled with a bunch of them and then brought our share home for the freezer.

It is a tremendous renewable resource and one that is under threat from the proposed Pebble Mine Project. Indeed, if the project is built many believe that it will substantially reduce or possibly even extinguish Bristol Bay’s run of sockeyes. Fighting against that is a cause I can get behind. So too can Rep Your Water, as they’ve produced a stylish No Pebble Mine! hat, for which 50% of the proceeds go to the Bristol Bay Defense Fund.

There’s also a matching No Pebble Mine! sticker for your car, laptop or boat, with the same percentage of the proceeds going to the cause.

If you want to literally wear it on your face, there’s also a No Pebble Mine! mask. Same great logo, same great cause.

If you’re really dedicated and want to show it, consider their Artist’s Reserve Sockeye Hat, made in coordination with Sight Line Provisions. It’s a hundred bones, but 100% of each sale will be donated the Bristol Bay Defense Fund and the S. Kent Rockwell Foundation will MATCH 100% of each donation as well!
