Snap, Crackle, POP! with Captain Shane Jarvis

As we sat at the bar at Casa Vieja Lodge this past February, Hanna and I struck up a conversation with a man who turned out to be near royalty in the billfish world. While he never really veered into bragging, it quickly became obvious that he’d been just about everywhere, fished for just about everything, and done so with all the leading lights of the offshore world. We weren’t going to even try to compete with him, in the “Have you ever…” game, but when we disclosed that we were headed to Panama two months hence, he stopped, looked at us, and said, “I hope you are fishing with Shane.”

Just “Shane.”

No last name needed.

Like “Madonna” or “Prince” – or in the bass world, “Roland or “KVD,” Shane Jarvis is a known commodity among people who know their stuff. As promised, the trip turned out to be both epic and luxurious, and exceeded our expectations, although Shane said we didn’t see it at its best.

What inspires a gringo to move down to a Central American country, start a fishing lodge on a remote island, and build a life of nearly two decades there? Here’s Shane in his own words.

I continue to be impressed by lodge owners who spend far more time on the water than in an office. That’s what makes this sport so meaningful to me, pure passion, and why we’ll be going back to Sport Fish Panama Lodge.
