WHAT ELSE did we catch in Panama in May?
Our primary goal of our May trip to Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge was to catch big yellowfin tuna and our group of 20 pretty much knocked that out of the park the first full day on the water. We had grown men asking the captains to find smaller fish because los gigantes had worn them out. Fortunately, even when the tuna are all XL, there are plenty of other species to catch there.
We didn’t catch any marlin on this trip. They are present year-round but the best times for that are the edges of the rainy season – July/August and December/January. We also didn’t land any wahoo, but one boat did have a brief hookup. However, we did land quite a few other species. Here’s a list of those I can recall:
African Pompano
Barracuda
Blue Trevally
Cubera Snapper
Horse Eye Jack
Houndfish/Needlefish
Jack Crevalle
Mahi Mahi
Rainbow Runner
Rock Snapper
Roosterfish
Sailfish
Yellow Snapper
In the chaos I probably missed a few.
Come join us on a future trip and add to your life list of species. We’ll be hosting at least two groups in Panama in 2027 and we’d love you to check it our in person. Email us today for more info.
