Sheefish Replicas
It probably won’t happen on our August 2026 trip to Alaska, when we’ll chase silver salmon on the Naknek River and various other species on the small stream flyouts, but at some point I’m going to try to catch a sheefish, which at least one writer has argued is “the greatest sportfish you’ve never heard of.”
They’re not necessarily beautiful – really just big whitefish – but they do grow big (the world record is 53 pounds) and more importantly they’re sufficiently rare and isolated that even many of my most globetrotting angling friends have yet to catch one. That might merit a replica.
Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be a lot of taxidermists who have experience replicating sheefish. I could only find the following examples. If you know of more, reach out – I probably have at least a few years before it’ll become an issue.
