Spytyrz are Kwytyrz

Did you know that legendary southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd had their own topwater lure?

There’s at least some limited photographic evidence that the band liked to fish but I don’t know if they were hard core about it.

As far as I can tell the Skynyrd Spitter was made by Allen Lures of Palatka, Florida, near the band’s hometown of Jacksonville. Both cities are of course on the St. Johns River.

I can’t get any confirmation, but some online sources indicate that the lure was made for charitable purposes in 1999 with the profits going to benefit the Columbine High School Recovery Fund. Allen Lures, which made a bunch of ultra-popular Florida hard and soft bait staples, had earlier purchased Ditto Manufacturing, which likewise had some huge successes, including the Gator Tail. About a decade ago, St. Johns River expert and veteran BPT pro Terry Scroggins purchased many of Ditto’s molds.
