The Angler’s Guide to Super Bowl LVIII

It’s Super Bowl Sunday, with the San Francisco 49ers aiming to earn their sixth title, and the Kansas City Chiefs hoping to win their fourth, and their third in the last five years. I have no rooting or betting in interest in either team, and as always I have fishing on the brain, so I take an angling-centric approach to the analysis.

Here are some nuggets of information and ephemera that may help my fellow fishermen take interest – assuming that they don’t miss the game for the early evening bite.

Here are Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce with the result of a good day of chasing redfish in Texas.

A Chiefs star from the other side of the ball, DT Chris Jones, appeared on Peter Miller’s saltwater fishing program. He was paired with Chargers QB Justin Herbert in a televised tournament called “The Catch” in Florida.

Backup QB Blaine Gabbert is all about the fishing lifestyle.

And of course Bassmaster MC Dave Mercer may hail from Canada, but he’s a huge Chiefs fan.

Turning to the NFC representatives…

QB Brock Purdy and his brothers “hunkered down” in Florida during the pandemic and spent a bunch of time chasing little green fish.

Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey gets after it with the long rod.

Clelin Ferrell has a fishing-themed sack dance that he admits was inspired by the one previously used by Brian Robison (now a tackle shop owner).

And, as you can see below, tight end George Kittle worked on “The Ultimate Fishing Truck Setup” for his uncle Pat.
