Stay Gold, Ponyboy
It’s seems that there’s a common progression among some of my fellow traveling anglers – they start off being serious bass fishermen stateside, then get a taste of peacock bass in Brazil, and subsequently head even further south to places like Argentina or Uruguay to chase Golden Dorado.
I think it was Skeet Reese who told me that if you tied a 10-pound Golden Dorado to a 20-pound peacock bass tail-to-tail the Golden Dorado would tow around his bigger friend like a diesel truck pulls a jon boat.
That’s why they’re so high on my list – that and the fact that they eat topwaters. It doesn’t hurt that they tend to live in places where there’s great red wine and beef, and perhaps we’ll stop over in Buenos Aires on the way there for a bit of culture. They’re also strikingly beautiful, with elements of salmon and striped bass and redfish plus other species. If we do manage to catch a trophy, I might just have to get a replica. Here are some that I’ve found online.
