Tee of the Week: My So-Called Spanglish Life
I took six years of Spanish classes from junior high and high school, and did well enough that I was exempt from taking more in college – which turned out to be a huge loss, because in the ensuing 38 years I’ve lost just about all of it. I can piece together a few words, occasionally enough to make a point, but not enough to be conversant. It’s a shame, because we spend a lot of time in Mexico, Guatemala and Panama, and intend to extend our reach in South America in 2026.
My good friend Bill Roberts is in very much the same boat, although he doesn’t travel in Latin America nearly as much, so his limited vocab isn’t as much of a day-to-day handicap. Still, we’ve developed a shorthand for our Spanish shortcomings: “Piso mojado.” It’s a way of acknowledging that we only know the most basic words, and often the ones that we do know won’t help us in a fishing or traveling content.
The folks at URT! URT! understand that calling out “Wet floor!” may actually have some value on the boat, particularly in the context of bloody decks. Perhaps if you wear the t-shirt pictured above, your worn reminder will save someone from ending up on their ass.
There’s also a sweatshirt version, because while an aching backside is bad, being sore and cold is even worse.
I don’t know much about the URT! URT! brand or story, but they are involved with and support various charities for veterans. If you want to help the cause, but the t-shirt above doesn’t fit your needs, consider one of the others, below.
