Tigerfish Beer
Our 2016 trip to Africa would’ve been life-changing even if we hadn’t had time to fish, but it was certainly made better by our days chasing tigerfish on the Zambezi River in Zambia. It was challenging for several reasons: First, we had to fish out of a pontoon boat because the hippos have a tendency to turn over smaller craft. Second, the fish are so fast and have such tough mouths that it seemed like for every 10 that struck, we hooked five and landed one or two. Finally, it was HOT. I think we topped out at 114 degrees, and it got up well past 100 every day. That meant we had to constantly hydrate with water, but when we headed back to the lodge to celebrate and recuperate we might’ve had a beer or three.
Reminiscing about that trip, I decided to check if there was a tigerfish-themed beer, and thought I’d hit paydirt with the following options:
Tigerfish IPA
Tigerfish IPA
Alas, the fact that they are from New Zealand and England, respectively, should’ve been a giveaway that they were not brewed in honor of African freshwater tigerfish, but rather saltwater tiger sharks. Oh well, I might someday have to try them anyway.
On our Africa trip we visited five countries, and went fishing and wildlife viewing in four: Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia (we only transited through South Africa). Here are some of the beers we enjoyed there. They may not be your favorites, but they hit the spot in the heat.
