Rum from Chiriquí Province, Panama
While we travel to Central America primarily to fish, there are many more reasons to visit countries including Guatemala and Panama. As my friend Elliott Stark made clear in The Book on Travel Fishing, angling experiences can be dramatically enhanced by eating specific foods and drinking superior libations tailored to the specific environment.
We’ve already associated Guatemala with rum and outlined the high-end coffee from Panama, but we’ve yet to explore Panama’s alcohol scene. Fortunately, not only have we enjoyed a few rum drinks down there, but we’ve been able to do it with liquor made locally. Indeed, Panama produces more than a few rums, but here are a few specifically from Chiriqui.
The best way to try them out, in my opinion, is after a long day of battling fish. If you’d like to join us on a future trip to the region, email us asap and we’ll get it set up.
And here’s one Panamanian rum that’s fish-specific – it’s produced in two distilleries, one of them in Chiriqui: Grander Rum
