Stuff We Like Inspired by our Travel
Fishing should be fun. Part of that is art and food and other things that don't put fish in the boat, but nevertheless make you enjoy the process more.
Who Needs a Translator?
Which is harder to understand: An Upper Midwest accent or one from South Louisiana? We put them to the test to find out during a recent swamp photography workshop.
Marlin Bottle Openers and Corkscrews
Catching a marlin is arguably the pinnacle experience for a sportfisherman. Whether it’s your first or your 500th, it’s an achievement that merits a drink or two. No beverage contained by a screw top will suffice. Here are tools that’ll help you access your elixir of choice:
Golden Dorado Tattoos: Ink Inspired by Argentina’s River Kings
Explore stunning golden dorado tattoos inspired by Argentina’s river kings. Get ink inspiration and plan your golden dorado fishing adventure on a Half Past First Cast hosted trip at Don Joaquin River Lodge.
Barramundi Tattoos
I expect that we’ll visit Australia sometime in the next decade. While we’re there, I want to fish for all sorts of exotic species, but I’ll probably be most disappointed if we don’t tangle with barramundi. In the meantime, I’m exploring some different barra art, including tattoos.
Sheefish Replicas
Sheefish are really just big whitefish, but they do grow big and more importantly they’re sufficiently rare and isolated that even many of my most globetrotting angling friends have yet to catch one. That might merit a replica. There aren’t that many out there.
Tribal Billfish Tattoos
You can certainly catch billfish in easily-accessible places but there’s something special about chasing them in exotic. We’ve loved our trips to Central America and look forward to branching out to places like French Polynesia. Maybe that’ll inspire us to get a tribal marlin or sailfish tattoo.
Puff the Magic Lager
Fugu is the Japanese name for pufferfish. In Japanese cuisine they’re a delicacy which require careful preparation to avoid the poison known as tetrodotoxin. There are a number of beers named after this legendary and photogenic fish, none of which are known to be poison.
Striped Marlin Art
As much as I’d like a replica mount of a striped marlin, our little house just won’t support it. Accordingly, I’ve let my mind drift to the idea of a striped marlin painting. It doesn’t necessarily fix our problem of not having much wall space to spare, but it still allows me to daydream in advance of the real deal.
Albino and Leucistic Sportfish Catches
Last year a group of anglers caught a leucistic Pacific sailfish in Guatemala. I thought that leucistic was just another word for albino, but it turns out they’re not quite the same. I’ve never seen an albino fish in the wild but after a bit of exploring, it turns out there have been a number of leucistic and albino fish caught around the globe in recent years.
Songs that Take Me Places
Some people love to fish in silence but I think that music makes the experience better — especially if it’s somehow related to the locale or the species you’re chasing. Here are four favorite fishing songs plus a bonus track.
Charting Our Baja Trip
I purchased waterproof cards from Rainforest Publications and Franko Maps to identify the marine life in Panama. They fit in my boat bag and have already come in handy a few times. With that in mind, I purchased Rainforest’s “Mexico Marine Guide: Pacific Coast, Sea of Cortez” for our upcoming trip.
Office Angling Artifacts – Billy Martin and the Sneaky Snake
Five-time New York Yankees manager Billy Martin had a bit of a fishing pedigree, but I’m not sure his lure endorsement meant a lot — nevertheless, his Sneaky Snake jointed lure occupies a prime space in my office.
The Loop Knot Gets a Boost from the Jighead Minnow
When you’re using one of the various finesse techniques popularized in the age of forward facing sonar, it pays to learn a loop knot. They provide the extra action trigger strikes from wary bass. Here are the experts’ tutorials on how to get it done.
Barracuda Beers
I can’t decide if barracuda are underrated as a species. They’re often seen as a nuisance fish, but they’re strong, aggressive and prolific. Often they’ll bite when no other fish will. So perhaps we should celebrate them a bit more. The following six brewers have already done so.
Crack Open a Cold Carp
In Europe, carp are revered. There’s an industry built around them with major tournaments. Here in America, though, they’re often considered one step up from rough fish. Anglers on both continents can agree that beer is good, however, and surprisingly there are some dedicated to old buglelips.
Tattoo of the Week – The King of Beers Becomes the King of Bass
While searching for crankbait tattoos, I found a tattoo of Heddon’s “Big Bud Lure.”. To Americans, it might seem like a snarky or nostalgic choice, but to many Japanese anglers it is serious business – it has a cult following there, so it’s shouldn’t necessarily be a surprise that someone committed to it forever.

Here’s to Swimmin’ With Bowlegged Women
Dating back at least to the Papa Hemingway days, offshore fishing and alcoholic spirits have been closely linked. You don’t need to be inebriated to enjoy it, there’s nothing wrong with a celebratory drink or two. You can elebrate in a species-appropriate manner —here are some options.

Marlin Board Shorts and Swim Trunks
A marlin is still Hanna’s dream fish, and we hope to fix that when we fish Mag Bay. I’m considering pulling out all of the stops to make sure she gets her chance, including dressing like one. Check out the following board shorts and swim trunks options.
